London Bridge Hotel An artistic spotlight on Aasiri Wickremage – London Bridge OPEN 2 Posted on 26/09/2019 by lbhblog We are turning the spotlight onto 17 talented artists who have contributed to our current exhibition – London Bridge OPEN 2 – whose theme of Boundaries coincided with The London Festival of Architecture held earlier this year. London Bridge Hotel is a former telephone exchange built in 1916 which is now surrounded by the equally stunning and evolving architecture of London Bridge. To reflect this contrast of historical and modern existing side-by-side, London Bridge Hotel’s General Manager, Julio Marques, has curated an exhibition which includes 20 different approaches to architecture using a myriad of methods including wood carving, oil paint on concrete, illustration, London’s pubs re-imagined, screen printing and painting on silk. We present our first artistic talent – Aasiri Wickremage who is exhibiting two works in the exhibition. She says: “I am a Sri Lankan born self-taught artist, living in Surrey, England. With a background in architectural studies, I enjoy travelling a lot. “Having lived in five countries, my work draws inspiration from multiple cultures and landscapes I experienced personally. My work highlights the experience of a landscape, its mood, character, lighting and density, through several layers of colour, lines, texture and brush strokes. I zoom in and out of the actual memory of the landscape to construct the story in mind. “I try to include the built and natural environments in my work as an interconnected entity. This, in my view, questions how the spaces occupy and correlate through the art work. Once I feel sufficient layers have been compiled, I pick out the details with lines that I feel contributes to the overall composition and character, then present it in an abstract format for the viewer to solve. OPEN 2 artworks are displayed throughout the public areas of the hotel and its adjoining Quarter Bar & Lounge, allowing potential buyers the opportunity to see an artwork in an environment more akin to a contemporary home. All OPEN art works can be purchased and the exhibition runs until December 2019.
